Who am I?

My name is Will Moon, I’ve been involved in one way or another with the knife and tool industry for over a decade. I started customizing knives in 2009, while I was still in college, and due to an overwhelmingly positive response to my knife mods, I began making knives in 2011.

My first design, the Orion Balisong, was my entry into the world of custom knife making, but I quickly transitioned into making folding knives in 2012 with the introduction of the Mk12 and the MkX series of knives. The Mk12 was an integral framelock flipper, which I later simplified into the bolsterlock Mk6. The Mk6 became famous after being featured prominently on Jim Skelton’s Youtube Channel among others, where it received wide critical acclaim. Almost as soon as I introduced the Mk6, there were calls to miniaturize it, which resulted in the smaller Mk7 framelock. Later in 2014, the Mk7 received an update to the Mk8 and the Mk6 became the Mk6A2, marking the move from shoulder bolt pivots to titanium three-piece pivots, a major quality improvement, along with the addition of the Mk9 in 2015, which added fancy interframe inlays into the Mk8’s frame.

The Mk6, 7 and 12 all share the same silhouette, but as time went on, I wanted to incorporate some new design concepts and language into my work, opting for a most straight-angled design in keeping with my preferred futuristic aesthetic, so I introduced the Mk10 around 2015. The Mk10 is a double bolsterlock, with a titanium strike face on the butt, and a modular construction so that, like all my knives, it could receive various blade shapes. In 2016, I introduced the Mk11 based on the Mk10, which was a framelock version of the knife with no inset handle scales.

In 2017, in a bid to make the lightest utility folder I could, I introduced the Stormcrow, a sub-linerlock flipper with a titanium liner set into a handle of machined aluminum, G10 or carbon fiber. While the Stormcrow was light, it didn’t fulfil the needs of my hard-use customer base, so I introduced the Banshee in 2018, my last knife design. The Banshee was built around the Spindle Lock, a derivation of the cross-bolt lock that has become so ubiquitous in the knife industry. Unlike most cross-bolt locks, the Spindle Lock used dual coil springs and piston pushrods to seal the action of the knife against debris, making it more tolerant of bad conditions. With coil springs, the Spindle Lock would virtually never suffer a spring failure, unlike traditional Omega springs.

In 2019, after receiving an offer to leave the knife world and join a venture startup as a UI/UX designer, I decided to leave full time knife making and suspend my knife and tool business.

During my time as a full time maker, I’m proud to have shipped knives to all 7 continents of the Earth, to hard working servicemen and emergency services workers to some of the world’s most discerning collectors. In addition to my custom knives, I continued to modify and doing stunning regrind knives throughout my tenure.
